A Flash Forward

I think I just experienced a 10 year flash forward!
Miriam and I were on our way to the dentist to fill her first cavity
(yuck) and had a few precious minutes alone. She was telling me that the
older boy she has a crush on was "not nice" to her yesterday and
wouldn't give her a toy she wanted. Then she tells me that her two
little girl friends tackled him to get the toy back, and she was "not
happy". I was a little confused and had to clarify that what she was
unhappy about was that her friends were being "mean" to her crush.
I couldn't help myself... I had to say something even if she IS just a
little girl. I told her, "I realize this is probably over your head, but
try to understand this baby. Don't ever choose a boy over your girl
friends. It's not worth it. Only about one man in a million is worth
losing a girlfriend over." Then time warped and my 5 going on 15 year
old looks at me and sighs... "Mommy, I don't LIKE your silly speech!!"
Time warped back and she started to giggle.

The Crew's Thoughts On Getting A New Brother

The nice thing about the kids being older with this adoption is they actually have thoughts and opinions about getting a baby brother. :)

Now Miss Katie has actually not expressed much of an opinion if you can believe that! She says "yes" if you ask if she wants a little brother, but that's about where the comments end. She does enjoy interacting with little ones Asher's age at church and other places. She will lead the little toddlers around and tell them "NO, you not suppose to touch that!" Hopefully Asher will have the personality to stand up to her!

Now Miriam, Miriam HAS an opinion. Oh, yes, she does. And she is NOT happy. She ordered a sister, NOT a brother. Any talk of her new brother is met with pouts and huffs and "I want a SISTER!!!" Talk to her long enough and she WILL finally admit that it is only fair that Evan get a brother before she gets ANOTHER sister. BUT she contends, then she gets that sister! She says we need five kids, thank you very much!! ;)

Evan... well, Evan is almost beside himself happy about the idea of a baby brother. If you talk about it with him, he gets the BIGGEST smile on his face. He will ask, "My baby brother will sleep in my room, right?" And, "where will my brother sit?" when looking at the car seats in the van. I told him having a little brother was a big responsibility. He nodded seriously and said, "Yeah, I got to teach him things. I teach him how to play with cars, how to play with blocks, how to tease sissies... " Oh, dear.... we might have a problem here! :)

Angels, or Something Like That

Conversation which began after Momma told Miriam and Evan they could hang the angel ornaments they made at church on the tree when we got home.
Miriam: Daddy! Momma said we can hang our angel on the tree!
Daddy: But I don't think you would like being hung up on the tree.
Miriam: What??
Daddy: You said we can hang our angels on the tree, and you are my angels
Miriam: NO, we're not angels! .... We're all God's children!

Miss Confidence

Miss Katie could easily take the award for Most Confident in our family. She's never met a stranger, just friends she hasn't met yet! She is also not shy in expressing her approval of others.. or asking for theirs, as a recent conversation showed:
Katie: Momma, I put my straw back in my cup!
Momma: Good job, Katie.
Katie: Giv' me high five!

Then there is just the plain ol' Katie funny:
Heard from Katie's stall in a public restroom..
"1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6,..... 5, 4, 3, 2, 1! I all done, Momma!!"

As the old saying goes...

Overheard at the other night: "Hey, Evan, pick my nose!"

After all the old saying is "you can pick your nose; you can't pick your siblings, but you can pick your siblings nose!" Or something like that!

On Sharing

One of the things we've been working very hard on lately is sharing and not just grabbing things from our siblings. Honestly most days I feel like no one is listening or learning a thing! But every now and then, just when I despair, I get a little sign of hope like this:

When we went apple picking the other day at lunch time I had Evan climb into the van to get his cup. He found his cup and one of those mini pretzel sticks... you know, the ones about 3 inches long. Without my saying anything, he broke it into 3 even pieces and gave one to each of his sisters. Aww, my sweet little boy!

Miriam has also gotten into the sharing mode, but she might have missed the point a bit! The other day at lunch she didn't finish her P.B.&J sandwich or banana. An hour later she wanted a snack. I reminded her of that half sandwich and banana still on her plate. She walked off eating the banana and carrying the sandwich. Three minutes later she is back asking for the snack and proudly declaring the banana and sandwich gone. This is how the conversation went:

Momma: Miriam you didn't have time to eat all your food already. What happened to your sandwich?
Miriam: Oh, I shared my sandwich with Evan.
Momma: What?!?!
Miriam: Well, Momma, I couldn't not share with Evan! (big innocent eyes)

God help me with this child!!
