A good way to give back to Ethiopia
I have an online acquaintance who made me aware of a child sponsorship program in Ethiopia. This woman knows the family that started and operates this program very well and can verify that they are legit. Coolest part is 100% of sponsorship money goes to the child! That's amazing!! Here is the summary of what they do:
The bottom line is that you pay $20.00 a month and 100% of the money is used to sponsor a child in Ethiopia. The money is used for food, basic medical supplies, and the clothes and other supplies that are needed for a child to go to school (in much of Africa, it's common for children to not be able to go to school unless they have the basic supplies they need) It's amazing to me that $20.00 a month can turn a child's life around, but it's the reality of the situation in Ethiopia (and much of Africa). Once you decide to sponsor, you are matched with a child and get his/her picture and some basic info.
Here is their website with more details and contact info: http://kingdomvisioninternational.org/
And here are some questions and answers about their program.
- How do you ensure that the funds are used for the right purposes? (E.g., do you have someone who documents what is bought with the money? Do you review this documentation? Do you meet with the sponsored children?) Yes, we have someone, a project manager, actually two one for Addis and one for Nazareth . There job is to help distribute the money and yes we do have documentation on all of this. To insure the money is spent the way it is intended, it isn't sent directly to the family, but instead the project manager goes to the school to pay tuition, buy books, goes with the family or will just purchase clothes, shoes, and supplies needed for school, medical bills will be paid as well if appropriate. The sponsored children are met with on a regular basis by the project manager and are always welcome to the KVI orphanages. The families are continually checked up on and made sure their needs are being met! We hope in the future to be able to have updates about every three months of these children, including pictures!! The kids are cared for and checked up on every two weeks.
- Can any Ethiopian child be sponsored, or do they need to be Christian? Yes, although KVI is a Christian organization, KVI cares for all people, regardless of gender, religion, race, and ethnicity. We believe that God's love is inclusive, and so our love will reflect His. We have several children who come from non-Christian homes and also several Muslim families.
- Once a child has been chosen to be sponsored, does their family have to do anything to continue to get the child sponsored? Are there any contingencies attached to the sponsorships that families must fulfill? No, there isn't anything a family must do to receive sponsorship. The requirement is to fill out paperwork and have a little bit of family background and their situation checked out by our project manager to see if sponsorship is a good fit for their family (verses family empowerment, adoption, or another service). Once they are signed up, they wait to get matched, and once matched they are free to receive the funds!
