The Hardest Thing: A Lil' Bug Update

by Dani

It's been a long time since I gave a real update on our Lil' Bug. It seems fitting to do it now as this month is a special month. A huge mile stone in an adoption story. This month our precious Lil' Bug has lived with our family as long as he lived without it. Twenty-one months and twenty-one months.

Today he is a very, very different little boy then the one placed in my arms Sept 13th, 2011.

He is every bit as much of a super hero...

That day he's gross motor skills were severely lacking but he over came with the love and activity of a family. Sometimes it's hard to get a picture that isn't a little blurred because he's moving so much and so fast! :)

His fine motor skills have also taken off (not that they were ever far behind). This child is in no way "disabled", he's just differently able! He was just so proud of himself when he figured out how to spray the water.

His brain keeps up with those hands too. He can count to 16 and knows most of his letters. He has no problem with puzzles like these.

Recently, he figured out one more thing. And wile we do still have the occasional accident he's doing great with it!

Truly, Lil' Bug is one of the sweetest, funniest, cutest, most wonderful little boys you will ever meet! (And I don't say that just because I'm blessed to be his mother!)  Some times I look at him and am just blown away by that sweet little face.

All the needs and all the delays Lil' bug came to us with seem so little now, except one. He still has one area where he just hasn't caught up and that is speech.

Despite the fact that he was in speech therapy two times a week from May 2012 to Dec 2012 and three times a week from January on through the school year, he's speech is still below many 2 yr olds. It's not his receptive speech (the language he understands), that seems to be typical for a 3.5 yr old. It's not even so much his actually vocabulary. It's his articulation. To be honest this whole speech issue is by far his hardest special need to deal with!

Of course we have been worried about this for sometime and have been doing some investigating. It took way too long dealing with doctors who just don't seem to want to do the obvious tests, but we think we finally have the answer. Lil' Bug actually has a 3rd previously undiagnosed need. He has moderate to severe hearing loss in one ear. WOW! So a little over a week ago, Lil' Bug got a hearing aid! He is doing very well with it and we have high hopes it will really help his speech.

The truth is though that no matter what we are so, so blessed to have this little boy in our family. No matter how long it takes or how hard it is to get him speaking, there is no question at all that he is worth every second! Love you so much, Lil' Bug!!!
